This artificial intelligence fraud could easily access your Gmail account.
A security specialist from Microsoft has issued an alert to Gmail users.
Artificial intelligence is advancing by leaps and bounds, creating tools that seem increasingly convincing and capable of deceiving users, including the most experienced ones. One alarming case involved a Microsoft security analyst who shared his experience about how he came close to becoming a victim of a sophisticated scam on Gmail.
Sam Mitrovic, a security consultant, recounted that when he opened his Gmail inbox, he found a message requesting him to restore his account, accompanied by a link to do so. Shortly after, he received a call from someone identifying themselves as a Google employee, alerting him to suspicious activity on his account. They claimed that someone in Germany had accessed his account and downloaded information in the past few days.
Mitrovic, like many others, decided to research the number online and discovered that it indeed led to an official Google site. This reinforced the apparent legitimacy of the call. However, before taking any action, he checked his account and found no anomalies. It was at that moment he identified the use of voice-cloning technology employing artificial intelligence, which explained the plausibility of the situation.
The clue that alerted him was the way the person on the other end of the line greeted him a second time after not receiving a response, which Mitrovic described as "perfectly subtle." This case highlights the growing concern over digital security and how new technologies can be used to manipulate and deceive.
In other advances related to artificial intelligence, Google is developing a model that can simulate the classic PC game, Doom, without needing to use its original code, successfully generating real-time graphics. Additionally, they are introducing a virtual assistant that helps YouTube users recover their accounts in case they are hacked, offering a process guided by a chatbot.
On the other hand, Gmail has recently implemented a new feature called "Polish," which uses artificial intelligence to improve the quality of emails. This tool allows users to choose from different options, such as formalizing or summarizing content, making it easier to write organized and clear emails.
