The Windows Notepad will soon be much more useful.

A previous update from Microsoft is incorporating significant artificial intelligence features into some older Windows applications, such as Notepad.

Microsoft has decided to incorporate artificial intelligence capabilities into its Notepad application, known for its basic functionality of handling plain text and saving files in .txt format. The new feature, called Rewrite, will allow users to generate alternative text tailored to their specific needs. With this tool, users can modify the text to make it more extensive, more concise, or present it in a particular tone or format. Additionally, the function will generate three variations of text for users to choose from, offering the option to try again if none of the options meet the desired criteria.

To use Rewrite, the user simply needs to select the desired text and right-click with the mouse or press Ctrl + I on the keyboard. This will open a text box displaying the alternative text options generated by artificial intelligence, as reported on the Windows Insider blog.

It is worth mentioning that Microsoft is not the only company promoting the use of artificial intelligence to enhance writing; the Rewrite function is similar to the summarizing and refining capabilities present in Google Workspace, as well as the Help Me Write option in ChromeOS. This new service will be available as part of an update for version 11.2410.15.0 of Notepad, and it will be accessible to Windows Insider users in the Canary and Dev channels. To try this feature, a Microsoft account is required. At launch, the function will be available in Windows 11 in the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, and Germany, as well as for users in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand who are subscribed to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family and Copilot Pro, who will be able to use artificial intelligence credits in Notepad.

However, since Rewrite is being launched as a preview, it has not yet been confirmed when it will be available in its full version. In addition to Rewrite, Microsoft has also provided updates for Paint that include Generative Fill and Generative Erase.
