The upcoming Arrow Lake H laptop chips from Intel will include more powerful GPUs for artificial intelligence tasks.

With the presentation of its new Arrow Lake desktop hardware line, Intel also revealed information about its upcoming Arrow Lake H mobile chips, designed for high-performance laptops. These processors are expected to be available by the first quarter of 2025. However, the wait may be worth it, as Intel promises that they will feature new powerful Xe GPUs with XMX technology. This upgrade will allow the GPU to achieve four times the performance in AI workload processing compared to previous models, in addition to doubling ray tracing performance and offering double the cache (8 MB L2).

Despite these improvements, it's important to highlight that the new chips will still lag behind the Lunar Lake processors in terms of NPU and overall AI performance figures (TOPS). The Arrow Lake H NPU will reach 13 TOPS, while the new GPU will hit 77, and the CPU will provide 9 TOPS, totaling up to 99 TOPS in performance. In contrast, Lunar Lake processors come with an NPU of 48 TOPS and up to 120 TOPS of overall system performance.

The distinction in capabilities makes sense when considering the purpose of each type of chip. Lunar Lake is primarily designed for ultrathin laptops and workstations, while the Arrow Lake H chips are aimed at notebooks that require desktop-level performance. Although they can be classified as AI PCs, the low NPU performance of Arrow Lake H does not meet the requirements for Microsoft's Copilot+ badge, which demands at least 40 TOPS in NPU. These new chips will enable basic AI functionalities, such as Windows Studio effects in video calls, but will not support more complex tasks like Recall.

Intel did not provide many other details about Arrow Lake H, but more information is expected to be shared during CES 2025.
