Netflix has released the first trailer for The Electric State, a road movie set in a post-apocalyptic world, directed by the Russo brothers, known for their work in Marvel and Community. The film is based on the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag, published in 2018, and is set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1990s, following a robot uprising.
The plot follows Michelle, an orphaned teenager played by Millie Bobby Brown, who embarks on a journey across the western United States in search of her younger brother. She is accompanied by a smuggler, played by Chris Pratt, who sports a distinctive mustache, along with a couple of robots.
The film's visual style is heavily inspired by Stålenhag's stunning illustrations, showcasing elements like large virtual reality headsets. The robots, especially the one accompanying Michelle, have a cartoonish aesthetic reminiscent of designs from games like Fallout. In the trailer, a large teddy bear-shaped robot can be seen as part of a parade of machines, while the protagonists face off against a huge robot that somewhat resembles Sonic the Hedgehog.
On the other hand, the use of a slowed-down version of a popular song in the trailer, in this case, "Champagne Supernova" by Oasis, may have reached a saturation point. While it fits the 90s vibe, its inclusion elicited laughter as it was immediately recognizable.
The film boasts an impressive cast. Besides Brown and Pratt, it features Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Giancarlo Esposito, and Stanley Tucci. The Electric State will premiere on Netflix on March 14.
