The TikTok ban is also affecting users outside the United States.
It is unclear how TikTok decides whom to block.
The recent TikTok restrictions in the United States appear to have impacted users from other countries. In the hours following last night's shutdown, many have taken to social media to express their inability to access the app, even from outside the U.S., and the reasons for this situation are not always clear.
In some cases, it has been noted that the problem is related to the use of VPNs that redirect traffic through the United States. A user on Reddit, originally from the UK, shared that they received a message intended solely for U.S. users when verifying their connection. However, after changing their VPN location, they managed to resolve the issue: "I received that message in the UK; I immediately thought to check my VPN, which was set to Miami. Once I changed that, TikTok worked fine."
However, this solution is not universal. The original thread creator, who also identifies as a resident of the UK, claimed they were not using a VPN and suggested that the problem might stem from the fact that they created their main account while living in the U.S. Other users who originally registered in the North American country also reported difficulties accessing the app, despite currently being in countries like Canada, Germany, Australia, Greece, and Poland.
Additionally, some individuals identify as users from the UK, Canada, and Australia, claiming they did not open their accounts in the U.S. Some of them have never even been in the country. Other users have commented that the app is blocked for them in places like Morocco or Ireland. A user from Mozambique speculated that the restriction could be related to circumventing their country's monetization laws by setting their account region as the U.S.
So far, TikTok has not provided a clear response regarding the possible causes of this situation, which affects individuals residing outside of the United States.
