The streaming release date of Joker: Folie à Deux on Max has been announced.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced the release date on the Max platform for Joker: Folie à Deux, the controversial sequel directed by Todd Phillips.
Arthur Fleck, the famous character portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, will arrive on the Max platform starting December 13 with the movie Joker: Folie à Deux. This sequel, which premieres on HBO the following day, has evoked polarized reactions among critics and audiences, who have largely issued unfavorable reviews towards Todd Phillips' musical direction. A.A. Dowd, in his review for Digital Trends, rated the film two stars, stating that it is unlikely to please fans of the first installment or attract new viewers.
The plot of Joker: Folie à Deux centers around Arthur, who, after murdering Murray Franklin during a televised event, is admitted to Arkham State Hospital while awaiting his trial. Although the Joker has achieved hero status in Gotham, Arthur goes through an identity crisis in the asylum. His perspective changes when he meets Harleen "Lee" Quinzel, played by Lady Gaga, with whom he shares his love through music and dance, helping him discover the hidden talent within himself.
The cast of the film also includes Brendan Gleeson as Jackie Sullivan, Catherine Keener as Maryanne Stewart, Steve Coogan as Paddy Meyers, Harry Lawtey as Harvey Dent, and Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond. Phillips served as both director and co-writer of the script alongside Scott Silver, based on DC characters.
Despite the overwhelming success of the first film, Folie à Deux could be seen as both a critical and commercial failure, with a "D" rating on Cinemascore and 32% on Rotten Tomatoes. The production, which cost around 200 million dollars, has grossed 206 million worldwide, potentially leading Warner Bros. to lose up to 200 million on this project.
