The Samsung Galaxy S25 is not fully compatible with Qi2 on its own.

Samsung has claimed that its new line of Galaxy S25 phones is "compatible with Qi2." However, what does this really imply?

Last year, Samsung phones did not support magnetic wireless charging Qi2. However, expectations were that this would change, as the company announced the arrival of compatible devices for 2025. Despite this, it seems that the world's largest phone manufacturer is still not fully committed, as the new Galaxy S25 line is described as "Qi2 ready" but not fully compatible.

This means that, like previous models, the Galaxy S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra can wirelessly charge at a power of up to 15 watts, which aligns with the specifications of the Wireless Power Consortium, the body that regulates the Qi2 protocol. However, the Galaxy S25 lacks the internal magnets necessary to facilitate connection and alignment with related accessories, which is why Samsung classifies it simply as "Qi2 ready" instead of fully compatible.

To use Qi2 accessories with the S25, it will be necessary to pair the phone with a case that includes a magnetic mounting system, of which Samsung promises to offer a range of options from both its own and third-party brands at launch. For those who typically use cases, this may not be problematic, as long as they acquire one that contains magnets.

However, for users who prefer to carry their phones without a case or are looking for something less bulky, options may be more limited. Some manufacturers have developed "skins" with included magnets to assist older phones that lack full Qi2 support, so it's likely that we will see similar alternatives for the S25.

Unfortunately, despite promises to launch devices with Qi2 support in 2025, Samsung has not fully met that expectation with the new S25 family, making the situation more complicated than it should be.

The Samsung Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra models have been officially unveiled. Pre-orders for the devices are already open and will begin shipping on February 7th.
