Voice communication on Nintendo Switch has never been easy, but with the arrival of the new Switch 2 console, Nintendo is integrating this feature in a fundamental way. Players will be able to access GameChat with their friends and family simply by pressing the new "C" button located on the right Joy-Con.

During a recent Switch 2 presentation, Nintendo showcased this feature, along with a new camera for the console that will be released on June 5, the same day the new handheld launches. If you have experience watching streams on Discord, you can imagine how GameChat will work. At the bottom of the interface, there are windows for each participant in the chat. At any time, up to four friends can share their screens and join a video conference if they have the Switch 2 camera. Each Switch 2 unit includes a microphone at the top of the device, making voice communication easier, and GameChat allows voice conversations between a maximum of 12 people. However, in the demonstration that Nintendo showed, friends' streams seemed to work with less fluidity than the main game.

Nintendo has implemented safety features to ensure a secure chat experience, such as the ability to report a user during the session. Additionally, users under 16 will need parental approval to use GameChat, which can be managed through an updated version of the Nintendo Switch parental controls app.

It is important to note that using GameChat will require a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online, although the company will offer a free trial available until March 31, 2026.
