The next Christopher Nolan film will feature "never-before-used" IMAX equipment.

Christopher Nolan continues to innovate as a filmmaker. For his next film, the Oscar-winning director will use an entirely new IMAX camera system.

Christopher Nolan, after achieving great success with Oppenheimer, now faces the challenge of surpassing his own accomplishments in his upcoming film project. In a quarterly earnings call, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond announced that the filmmaker will use "never-before-seen" technology for filming. Gelfond expressed excitement about the collaboration, indicating that Nolan will be employing new equipment developed over the past year by IMAX's technical teams.

Over more than 15 years, Nolan has established himself as one of the most prominent filmmakers in the use of IMAX. The Dark Knight, for example, was the first major film to be shot with high-resolution IMAX cameras. Other iconic Nolan titles, such as Interstellar and Tenet, have also incorporated these cameras for their complex sequences. In fact, Nolan made history by being the first director to use IMAX to shoot black-and-white scenes. The forecast came true, as Oppenheimer won seven Oscars and grossed nearly a billion dollars at the box office.

The introduction of this new equipment has sparked speculation about the type of movie Nolan is preparing. Although IMAX is commonly associated with action films, it has not yet been confirmed whether the new project will be an action thriller. Currently, two rumors are circulating: one suggests that the new film could be a horror movie, while another comes from a Reddit user claiming that Nolan and his team are collaborating with the NYPD.

If it were confirmed to be an action film, speculations indicate it could involve police in helicopters. This idea seemingly stems from the 1983 film Blue Thunder, which follows the lives of officers operating high-tech helicopters. Although the plot is still uncertain, some details about the cast have been confirmed, including Matt Damon and Tom Holland. Additionally, Universal Pictures, which previously distributed Oppenheimer, has scheduled the release of the new film for July 17, 2026.
