The new Meta Quest update improves hand tracking and facilitates quick connections to the PC.
With the new update, you will be able to view any keyboard you have in virtual reality.
Meta has introduced update v72 for Quest, which includes a number of new features that enhance the user experience. Among these enhancements are faster hand tracking, a simplified process for pairing the headset with a PC running Windows 11, and improved support that allows users to display the keyboard while in a fully immersive virtual reality. The rollout of this update will occur gradually, so some features may not be immediately available.
One of the standout new features is the ability to connect your PC via the Quest's Remote Desktop function simply by looking at it and tapping the "Connect" button that appears above the keyboard. This method is similar to that used on the Vision Pro, but to establish the connection, the Mixed Reality Link application must be installed on your computer. Additionally, this feature is exclusive to systems running Windows 11 22H2 or later versions.
Another significant improvement is a new keyboard detection system that will allow any keyboard nearby to be visible through a viewing "window" while the user is in a virtual environment. Although Quest devices have offered a virtual keyboard version in the physical keyboard's location since 2021, it only worked with specific models.
Meta has also optimized the cursor to make it more stable for navigating and selecting items through pinch gestures. Usability in tight spaces has been improved, and a "hand ray visualization" has been added to help locate objects to interact with using the cursor.
In addition to these innovations, update v72 includes live captions for calls in the People app and the addition of direct messaging in the Instagram app. A new app called Media Gallery has also been launched, allowing users to view images, videos (including spatial ones), and screenshots.
