The new Canon app allows live streaming from multiple cameras, but not from your own.

Turn your iPhones and iPads into a mobile studio.

Canon has introduced a new live-streaming application that allows users to wirelessly connect and switch between the video feeds of three mobile devices. For now, this app is only compatible with iPhones and iPads running at least iOS and iPadOS 16, while Android is not supported. Interestingly, Live Switcher Mobile is not compatible with any of Canon's digital cameras, although the company has stated that this functionality will be added in the future, according to the FAQ section.

The app is already available for download and can be used for free, albeit with certain limitations. The maximum video quality is set at 720p, and the output is stamped with a watermark. Additionally, the app's interface may display ads occasionally, although these are not shown to the audience. For a cost of $17.99 per month (over $215 per year), the output quality increases to 1080p, removing ads and the watermark. However, there is no option to increase video resolution beyond HD.

The device that acts as the main camera during the live stream also provides the interface for switching between the various sources. One device is designated as the host, offering the switching interface and functioning as the main camera. Up to two additional devices can be connected to provide video feeds from alternative angles or live screen captures from a video game.

Switching between different feeds can be done manually, but if you prefer not to touch the device that is functioning as one of the cameras, the app allows for automatic switching between sources at intervals ranging from eight to 20 seconds. Additionally, it is possible to stream multiple videos simultaneously using a picture-in-picture effect, and text and image overlays can be added to customize the live stream, incorporate branding, or provide captions.

Canon has stated that the app supports live streaming to platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and others that support RTMP, although the comment viewing feature is limited only to the first two. While its functionality is not as advanced as the free OBS Studio program, which also allows mobile devices to be used as video sources, Canon's Live Switcher Mobile is presented as a more accessible alternative for aspiring influencers who are starting in the live streaming world.

Although it is currently limited to mobile devices, the company has confirmed that the app "will support the connection of Canon digital cameras in the future." With that additional functionality and perhaps an upgrade for streaming capability to 4K, its high cost could be justified for those seeking a highly portable streaming solution.
