The new audio-based Peloton app acts as an invisible personal trainer.
The app is aimed at those who enjoy working out at the gym.
Peloton has launched Strength Plus, a new standalone audio-based strength training app. This app, which was initially introduced in a limited beta program in early September, is now officially available. Strength Plus allows users to create custom workouts by selecting exercise duration, equipment, experience level, and the muscle groups they want to focus on. Additionally, it offers carefully designed multi-week programs created by Peloton's strength coaches, although workouts can be done at the user's preferred pace.
The app includes audio cues and tips from instructors, as well as a library of instructional videos demonstrating exercises and equipment setup. Unlike standard Peloton classes, where participants follow an instructor in real-time, Strength Plus resembles more of a strength training playlist. Furthermore, it is compatible with Apple Watch, allowing users to log weights and repetitions within the app. Another advantage is that users can listen to their own music, audiobooks, or podcasts instead of being limited to music chosen by instructors.
The introduction of this app is not unexpected, as Peloton has mentioned multiple times that strength training is its second most popular type of workout, although the company has had varied success in capitalizing on this area. In 2022, Peloton launched its strength training device, Guide, but it has not made the same impact as its treadmills or bikes. Following the revocation of the Peloton app, gym dynamics were added that provided written workouts and video demonstrations, although it was neither a standalone app nor allowed users to log repetitions or include multi-week programming.
Strength Plus enters an already competitive market, similar to other apps like Ladder, which has even responded with an advertising campaign. The significant difference is that Strength Plus benefits from Peloton's most recognized instructors. This strategy could be interpreted as an attempt to expand Peloton's appeal beyond the home, an area where the company has struggled since many people began returning to gyms and in-person classes after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.
Current Peloton All Access, Guide, and App Plus members can access Strength Plus for free. For others, Peloton is offering a promotional subscription of one dollar per month for the first six months, after which the cost will be $9.99 per month. Currently, the app is only available for iOS, and while Peloton was asked about its potential expansion to Android, there was no immediate response.
