The new Apple macOS Sequoia enables easy window adjustments — discover how to do it.

Create window mosaics with macOS Sequoia.

With the arrival of macOS Sequoia, Mac users can now enjoy "snapped windows" functionality, similar to what Windows users have been utilizing for years. This new feature allows for efficient organization of windows on the screen, facilitating multitasking. For example, users can have a Spotify playlist alongside their email or a developing report next to reference articles.

To use this option, once macOS Sequoia is installed, several methods can be employed to snap windows.

Using the Green Button
Hovering over the green maximize button in the corner of any open window will reveal several snapping options. Users can choose to maximize the window, snap it to the side of the screen, or resize it to a quarter of the visible area. Upon making a selection, other windows will automatically rearrange to fill the available space on the screen.

Drag and Drop
Users can also opt to drag the open window to the desired position. Moving the window towards an edge will take up half of the screen; dragging it to the top will fill the entire screen, and dragging it into a corner will occupy a quarter of the visible area. This method only affects the selected window. By holding down the Option key while dragging, outlines will display areas where the windows can be placed.

Window Menu
Another alternative for snapping windows is through the dropdown "Window" menu in the application being used. There, users can select "Move and Resize," choosing between half or quarter options to adjust the active window, with the ability to rearrange other windows as needed.

Keyboard Shortcuts
For those who prefer using the keyboard, shortcuts are also available to manage individual windows. While there are no specific shortcuts for the quarter sections, windows can be controlled with the following commands:

  • Fn + Control + F – fill the entire desktop with the window
  • Fn + Control + C – center the window on the desktop
  • Fn + Control + arrows – move the window left/right or up/down

Additionally, there are shortcuts to move the active window and rearrange other windows to fit the new position of the main window.

Customizing Snapped Windows
macOS allows for the customization of some snapping settings from the "System Settings." Within the "Desktop & Dock" menu, users can enable or disable features like drag to snap, as well as decide whether snapped windows should have margins between them.

Third-Party Tools
Prior to the implementation of this functionality in macOS, there were various third-party tools that addressed the need for window snapping. These tools often offer greater control and more options than those provided by macOS Sequoia. Among the most notable are Magnet, which costs $9.99 and allows for more flexibility by dividing the screen into thirds and sixths, and Rectangle, which offers a free basic version and a Pro version for $9.99, allowing users to customize snapping areas and keyboard shortcuts, as well as pin windows in specific positions.
