iPhone users who have the capability to run iOS 18 and are enrolled in Apple’s developer program can now download and test the beta version of iOS 18.2. One of the most notable features of this experimental operating system is the option to share the location of a lost item linked to Apple’s Find My network with third parties.
Previously, it was possible to share the location of an item with contacts, but this expanded feature could be especially useful in situations where help from strangers is needed. For example, if a suitcase is lost, you could send its location to airline staff or airport workers.
By selecting “Share Object Location” in the Find My app, you will be given the option to send a link that shows the position of the lost item. The person receiving the link will be able to access it from any device, without needing an iPhone or iPad, and will also see your email address and/or Apple phone number to facilitate contact with you. Additionally, you will have the ability to see how many people have visited the link, which will expire once you retrieve your belonging or after a week if it hasn't been found.
It’s important to note that installing beta software can come with some drawbacks. There is a higher likelihood of encountering bugs, and some apps or features may not operate as expected. Those interested in trying iOS 18.2 will need to enroll in the Apple developer program and select the new beta updates within the device's settings options.
Update, November 5, 2024, 9:10 AM ET: This information has been updated to clarify that these new features are available in the developer beta of iOS 18.2. The public beta of this software is not yet available.
