The monthly use of ChatGPT could match that of Google Chrome.
Similarweb statistics indicate that the use of generative artificial intelligence tools is continually increasing, with ChatGPT experiencing the most significant growth.
A group of popular generative artificial intelligence platforms is experiencing steady growth as users discover how to utilize these tools. In this context, ChatGPT emerges as a leader with 3.7 billion visits globally, even rivaling the market share of browsers like Google Chrome, which has approximately 3.45 billion monthly users. According to recent statistics, ChatGPT has recorded a month-over-month growth of 17.2% and a year-over-year increase of 115.9% in traffic.
One of the factors driving ChatGPT's growth in 2024 has been its web address update, which transitioned from a subdomain, chat.openai.com, to a main domain, chatgpt.com. Notably, there was a surge in visits in May 2024, reaching a milestone of 2.2 billion visits, and it has continued to rise since then, according to researcher David F. Carr from Similarweb.
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has maintained a prominent presence in the tech industry, and OpenAI continues to expand its product with new versions, features, and complementary applications, known as GPTs, to keep users engaged. Among the latest updates, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Search, an internal search engine feature that provides real-time answers to inquiries about sports events, breaking news, and stock quotes. This evolution has led many to note that the AI tool now offers services quite similar to those of Google Search, despite being intended to compete with it.
In comparison, Google’s Chrome browser holds a strong market share with 35.4 billion users in 2024, showing modest year-over-year growth but a 45.35% increase over the past five years. Recently, OpenAI acquired the domain Chat.com, although it has yet to announce specific plans for this product.
Meanwhile, other AI tools are also experiencing traffic and growth, although not at the same level as ChatGPT. Despite recent plagiarism accusations, the Perplexity chatbot achieved 90.8 million visits in October, representing a month-over-month growth of 25.5% and a year-over-year increase of 199.2%. Meanwhile, Google’s Gemini chatbot recorded 291.6 million visits in October, with month-over-month growth of 6.2% and a year-over-year increase of 19%, following the introduction of a ChromeOS update that incorporated new AI features for Chromebooks.
Anthropic’s Claude chatbot reached 84.1 million visits in October, with a month-over-month growth of 25.5% and an impressive year-over-year increase of 394.9%, after recently launching a desktop application for Windows and macOS. Microsoft’s Copilot website received 69.4 million visits in October, with an 87.6% month-over-month growth. Finally, NotebookLM achieved 31.5 million visits in October, recording growth of over 200% month-over-month. This application, based on Google’s generative models, allows users to process and summarize different information formats using AI commands.
