The Model Y receives a redesign aimed at dogs, joining the list of vehicles created for and by canines.
The upcoming Tesla Model Y may have experienced a delay to be more dog-friendly, but it is not the first vehicle designed with canines in mind.
The CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, confirmed that a refreshed version of the Model Y will not be launched this year. However, he emphasized that the company makes continuous improvements to its vehicles, meaning that even a car that has been on the market for six months can offer enhancements. Apart from constant software updates, a substantially updated version of the Model Y is expected in the first quarter of 2025, which will include improvements in efficiency and performance, as well as a new suspension system that will enhance the driving experience.
The interior of the new Model Y will feature more control functions moved to the touchscreen, including the gear lever, and a 360-degree acoustic glass will be introduced. Additionally, rear passengers will have screens for entertainment, allowing them to stream content, play games, and control the climate. This advancement will generate passionate debates among Tesla followers. However, there is one aspect that many do not consider: the influence of dogs on the vehicle design, as concerns about their well-being are being taken into account, which has delayed the launch process.
The Model Y is being redesigned to provide a wider third row of seats, potentially making it more appealing in China, a market where local rivals have more spacious interiors. This focus on dog comfort in cars is uncommon and raises the question of how many car manufacturers actually consider the needs of dogs when developing new models.
Some brands, such as Jaguar Land Rover, emphasize that they seek to create versatile vehicles that owners can adapt to their needs. The importance of a spacious and safe environment for dogs is receiving increasing attention, aiming to make the car a pleasant and comfortable place for everyone, including animals.
Tesla has implemented a "dog mode," which allows for maintaining an appropriate interior temperature while owners leave their pets inside the car, monitoring the situation through a mobile app and a live camera. However, it is advised that leaving dogs alone in the car is not recommended, something a Tesla owner experienced firsthand when facing animal cruelty charges. Fortunately, the charges were eventually dismissed.
Family vehicles now need to meet diverse needs, leading some brands to literally create "pet packages." For example, Aston Martin offers a "pet package" for its DBX model, which includes a divider and a dog bed, among other useful items. Additionally, Rolls-Royce has created luxury collars and leashes for dogs made with natural leather and fine details.
The design of vehicles is also affected by the choice of materials, as durable plastics are used in the rear areas. However, challenges in this regard have driven manufacturers to explore innovative solutions, including access ramps and dog protectors in the trunk.
It has even been mentioned that some exterior car designs have been inspired by dogs interacting with pre-production models, highlighting how much these animals influence the creation of vehicles that are not only for humans but also take into account the experience of our furry companions.
