The Instagram profile grids will feature rectangles instead of squares.
The profiles are going to change their appearance.
Instagram has decided to make a change to the profile grid display, which will now show content in rectangular format instead of squares. This modification, according to the platform's director, Adam Mosseri, will be implemented over the weekend.
In a story posted on the app, Mosseri expressed that he understands many users appreciate the aesthetic of square photos, which have been a hallmark of Instagram. However, he noted that nowadays, most uploaded content, both photos and videos, tends to be in vertical orientation. He emphasized that excessive cropping of content can be frustrating.
While acknowledging that this modification might cause inconvenience to some users, Mosseri believes it is a lesser evil. He argued that in the long run, users will be happier seeing more of their photos and videos as they were created, rather than having them severely cropped on the profile.
This rationale is similar to what he expressed in August when Instagram conducted a limited test of this new display.
Additionally, it was announced that the app will incorporate a new section in the Reels area, where users can view the videos their friends have liked.
