The impressive new 6K monitor from LG resembles those from Apple.
LG has unveiled its new UltraFine monitor, which represents a significant upgrade. This model features a 6K display, Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, and an impressive redesigned look.
LG has unveiled its new UltraFine 6K Display at CES 2025, marking a milestone as the first 6K monitor to incorporate Thunderbolt 5 ports. This type of connection was recently introduced in Apple's MacBook Pro with M4 Pro and the Mac mini, which could give LG a competitive edge in this area. In addition to being compatible with Apple's new technology, LG's monitor features a design reminiscent of Apple's iconic Pro Display XDR.
Details about this display are still limited. The monitor boasts a Nano IPS Black panel that offers 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. Compared to traditional IPS monitors, Nano IPS Black technology provides deeper blacks and better color accuracy, though it is still considered inferior to OLED and mini-LED screens. However, the inclusion of Nano IPS could make the UltraFine Display's price more accessible, which is a factor to consider.
In terms of design, the monitor has eliminated the curved stand in favor of a slimmer geometric style. The edges are so thin that they practically become invisible in the teaser image, and there are no visible notches or logos. The model is identified as 32U990A, which, based on previous models, suggests it is a 32-inch display. One aspect that has not yet been revealed is the refresh rate. Thunderbolt 5 can offer up to 120 Gbps of bandwidth, allowing the connection of two 8K displays at 60Hz, suggesting it could support a 6K display at 120Hz. However, this does not guarantee that LG will choose to enable the 120Hz rate, and we will have to wait for their announcements.
Despite the lack of detailed information, the reception of LG's new monitor has been positive. With its Apple-like design, this product could be an excellent alternative for those who do not wish to invest $4,999 in Apple's Pro Display XDR. If it manages to enable a 120Hz refresh rate, it could become a solid option for creative professionals.
