The fourth installment of The Witcher is unexpectedly revealed at the Game Industry Awards.
At the Game Awards 2024, The Witcher IV was announced, featuring Ciri as the new protagonist of the game.
CD Projekt surprised everyone with an unexpected announcement during The Game Awards 2024 by presenting a cinematic trailer for The Witcher IV. This new chapter of the famous RPG saga will focus on Ciri, who will take on the role of monster hunter, though a release date has not yet been set.
The trailer begins with familiar images from The Witcher, showing a hooded witcher using magic signs and preparing with a silver sword. However, it is soon revealed that the protagonist is not Geralt, but a more mature Ciri who is gearing up to stop a sacrificial ritual. Despite being part of a cinematic, the trailer features several elements that could serve as proof of the game's concept.
In her confrontation with a mutated creature, Ciri employs potions, signs, and her sword, as expected, but also reveals a new weapon in the form of a chain to defeat the beast. Realizing she was unable to save a girl, Ciri confronts the villagers, who attempt to justify their actions as a sacrifice "for the gods." Her response, "There are no gods here, only monsters," is a clever nod to a previous trailer for The Witcher III.
Among the few updates announced about The Witcher IV, it was highlighted that it will be developed as a new single-player RPG using Unreal Engine 5, with the ambition of being "the most immersive and ambitious open-world game in the saga to date." This title aims to illustrate Ciri's journey to becoming a true witcher, marking the beginning of a new saga.
CD Projekt has already revealed other projects within The Witcher universe, including a remake of the first game and another codenamed Polaris, which is now confirmed as The Witcher IV. No information has been shared about platforms or a release window for the game. Although Geralt's voice can be heard in the trailer, it is still uncertain whether he will appear in the game. However, the voice actor has hinted that he may have a minor role in this new installment.
