The first update for the OnePlus 13 includes Gemini Nano, camera enhancements, and more.
The first update for the OnePlus 13 fixes several notable camera issues related to color accuracy in photo mode. Additionally, it incorporates some Gemini AI enhancements in the device.
The OnePlus 13 has started to receive its first major software update since its launch, bringing with it a series of significant changes. One of the most notable is the incorporation of artificial intelligence capabilities in the device, courtesy of Google’s Gemini Nano model. Unlike the Pixel 9 series phones, Gemini Nano takes a more modest approach to what it can offer on this OnePlus flagship. The official changelog only mentions support for "AI features" in the Google Messages app. In practice, this feature refers to Magic Compose, which generates responses based on context extracted from previous messages in a conversation. On the other hand, Pixel 9 devices offer more advanced functionalities, such as on-screen content summaries, call notes, and weather reports generated by AI, among others.
Once the update is installed and the pre-installed Messages app is opened, a brief loading time is required for the necessary AI assets to download before the feature is ready for use. In my case, using a Wi-Fi network, the entire process took less than a minute.
In addition to the new capabilities of Gemini Nano, the latest update of OxygenOS 15 (v15.0.0.402) also introduces a series of camera-focused changes and updates the security patch to the December version. One of the most significant changes is the improvement in the clarity of videos recorded in 4K at 60 frames per second (fps). The update also promises to fix color performance in the default photo mode, especially on the main and telephoto sensors.
Among the improvements are tonal and color accuracy in photos and solutions to inconsistencies in brightness reproduction in images. Additionally, network stability and performance optimizations are part of the update package. Several styles and customization options have also been added to the watermark indicator, including options like Hasselblad, Master signature, film, classic camera, and more. In my experience, there is a significant difference in color chemistry and ISO levels between images captured in the default photo mode and the Master mode. I trust that this update will address that disparity.
Another notable addition from the update is the Touch to Share system, which allows file sharing between a OnePlus device and an iPhone by simply tapping the two devices together. This feature is similar to Apple's implementation called Tap to Share, which is used for sending money or exchanging contacts. The latest update of OxygenOS 15 for the OnePlus 13 is being gradually rolled out and will reach all users in the coming days.
