The DHS establishes its standards for companies using artificial intelligence.
A new framework for the use of artificial intelligence encompasses the entire supply chain.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has implemented a new guideline system aimed at promoting the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in critical infrastructure sectors. This framework, titled "Roles and Responsibilities for Artificial Intelligence in Critical Infrastructures," seeks to address current challenges to facilitate broader adoption of AI in areas where its time-saving capability is essential.
In its announcement, the department emphasized that this framework is pioneering in that it encompasses all levels of the supply chain, including cloud computing providers, AI developers, and consumers. It aims to address risks associated with artificial intelligence, such as system vulnerabilities and attacks, given the increasing use of generative AI in these sectors. The DHS warned that, since these systems are interconnected, their disruption could have devastating consequences for national security.
DHS Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas stressed that widespread adoption of this framework would significantly contribute to the security of vital services such as drinking water supply, constant energy, and internet access. He called on executives, developers, and elected officials to implement this framework in pursuit of a safer future.
The framework consists of a series of actions directed at various stakeholders in the supply chain, including cloud infrastructure providers, AI developers, owners and operators of critical infrastructure, as well as members of civil society, such as universities and research institutions, and entities in the public sector across different levels of government.
Gina Raimondo, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, added that this new framework will complement the efforts of the Department of Commerce to ensure that AI is implemented responsibly in critical infrastructure, with the goal of protecting citizens and securing the future of the North American economy.
