The developers of Horizon have finished with Killzone.
Guerrilla Games gained notoriety thanks to the Killzone saga, but it seems that the studio has decided to leave that series behind.
Guerrilla Games has been immersed in the development of the Horizon series for several years, indicating that the saga is far from over. This, however, is not good news for fans of Killzone, their original franchise. In a recent interview, a member of Guerrilla mentioned that the studio decided to move away from the dark shooter series when they began working on Horizon Zero Dawn. Art director Roy Postma emphasized that as a team, they were "done" with Killzone and that a change in direction was necessary, opting for a completely different approach.
Guerrilla Games began its journey in the video game industry in 2003, and its first major success was Killzone, a first-person shooter set in a dystopian world. In total, the company released five Killzone games, four of which were developed after being acquired by Sony. However, the transition to Horizon games meant saying goodbye to Killzone, culminating in 2013 with Killzone: Shadow Fall. Since then, there have not been many updates about the Killzone series from Sony; only a few minor appearances in other games like Astro Bot have been noted.
The servers for Killzone: Mercenary for PlayStation Vita were shut down in 2020, marking a clear closure for that phase of Guerrilla's development. Meanwhile, the studio has not completely distanced itself from the complexity in the tone of Horizon Zero Dawn, but its upcoming release, Lego Horizon Adventures, set to launch on November 14, will take a more family-friendly approach. This title is a reinterpretation of Horizon Zero Dawn, but presented with block characters, a more playful sense of humor, and simplified gameplay, aiming to connect parents with their children.
On October 31, the release of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is also scheduled. Additionally, recent reports suggest that Guerrilla is working on a new project called "Horizon online," which would develop before a third main title. Despite these advancements and the evolution of the saga, Guerrilla is not expected to make announcements about Killzone in the near future. However, the recent trend towards remasters and remakes could open the door for other studios to venture into recovering classic titles.
Meanwhile, Horizon Forbidden West, which has been available on PS5 for more than two years, recently arrived on PC. This game has become a benchmark for performance testing on this platform, noted for its enhanced graphical options. While the transition to PC supports higher graphical demands, some older systems may struggle to take advantage of the maximum visual quality.
On another note, Guerrilla Games confirmed the existence of a multiplayer game set in the same universe as Horizon. Through a social media post announcing new vacancies in their team, it was mentioned that an internal group was developing an "Online Project" within the Horizon universe, where players will be able to explore the majestic landscapes of the game together.
With the recent expansion of the saga and interest in new developments, it is clear that Guerrilla Games remains committed to creating exciting experiences for fans of their titles. In the long term, a new chapter in Aloy's story and her world is anticipated.
