The costs of memory could increase: reasons why you should care.
Micron has made public its decision to increase the prices of its entire product range, including DRAM and NAND flash memory.
Micron has made a significant announcement stating that it plans to increase prices across its product range, including both DRAM and NAND memories. Although the price increase will be implemented gradually and not abruptly, it is expected to notably affect the cost of RAM. This suggests that even the best memory products could become more expensive. Recently, the company communicated to its investors—information that was shared by other media—the reasons behind this decision. Micron noted that after a period of price stability over the last two years, the memory and storage market is showing signs of improvement.
The demand in the sector has driven this situation, with the growing need for memory and NAND flash in artificial intelligence applications being one of the main factors. In the business realm, this translates into a greater need for high bandwidth memory (HBM), essential in data centers for tasks such as AI acceleration and using GPUs for AI. This could mean an increase in costs for companies like Nvidia, which relies on DRAM and NAND flash used in both SSDs and other devices like smartphones and USB drives. For consumers, while increases in the costs of related products are anticipated, these are expected to be less pronounced than those facing large companies. Thus, although prices for components like RAM kits and SSDs may rise, drastic changes for the general market are not expected.
In another entertainment sphere, Amazon Music Unlimited has announced a subscription fee increase affecting both individual and family plans. Starting March 5, 2025, individual subscribers will pay one dollar more, while family plans will see a three-dollar monthly increase. The changes will impact subscribers in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, with more pronounced increases in the latter. This is the first price hike since 2023, and Amazon argues that the price adjustment is necessary to continue offering new content and features.
In the film world, Quentin Tarantino has expressed that he is in no hurry to start production on his latest movie, preferring to spend time with his children and focus on writing a theater project that could become a film. This decision comes after the cancellation of his previous project, and although he has had success with his past works, he is contemplating the future of the film industry, which he claims has changed drastically since 2019 due to the rise of streaming.
On the other hand, Netflix is also preparing to raise prices across all its subscription tiers, including those with advertising. Despite surpassing 300 million subscribers in the last quarter, the company seeks to increase its revenue stream with adjustments ranging from $1 to $2.50 monthly, starting from the next billing cycle. This includes an increase in the price of the standard and premium plans, as well as pricing for its ad-supported tier, which will become more expensive for the first time.
