The arrival of the Switch 2 is near, but portable PC consoles are posing strong competition.

The news from CES 2025 is making the industry even more fascinating.

The original Nintendo Switch had a clear path to success, quickly demonstrating the quality of a device that combines console and portable features. Now, a new version of the Switch is on the horizon, which will have to face a market filled with powerful gaming-dedicated portable PCs. This situation has become even more interesting following the announcements made at CES 2025.

Valve's Steam Deck was a pioneer in this segment thanks to its Linux-based SteamOS, which makes gameplay easier compared to traditional consoles. One of the most relevant announcements from CES was that Valve will allow the installation of SteamOS on other portable devices starting in April, which could make the handheld gaming market much more attractive.

Lenovo has already announced that its Legion Go S device, the first non-Valve device to feature SteamOS, will go on sale in May with a price tag of $499. However, other manufacturers are also expected to launch their own versions with SteamOS, which could further diversify the options available to gamers.

CES 2025 also showcased other interesting devices, such as the Acer Nitro Blaze 11, which features a 10.95-inch display, detachable controllers, and a stand. Additionally, Intel and Tencent presented their own portable console with an 11-inch screen and 3D stereo audio capabilities. The MSI Claw 8 AI Plus and a new dock from Razer for portable gaming devices were also on display. Meanwhile, Microsoft announced updates to enhance the Windows experience on handhelds later in the year, which will benefit users of hardware based on this system.

Although there are many promising innovations, Nintendo remains a very strong competitor. The next generation of the Switch, expected soon, will likely surpass its predecessor in power and will offer new titles from iconic franchises like Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda. The initial game library will be substantial, as the new system will be compatible with games from the original Switch, including many indie titles that are also acclaimed in the portable PC space.

Since the launch of the Switch in 2017, this segment has evolved significantly. The arrival of new competitors could lead to an increase in the quality of both the hardware and the games available, resulting in an exciting time for portable gaming devices.
