The arm-free PP-1 turntable is made from a solid block of aluminum.

A minimalist design that hides most of its technology.

A creative studio based in Paris has introduced a minimalist turntable that simplifies its design to include only a play button and a volume control. The PP-1, which stands for "Plug and Play," is a device that even lacks a visible tonearm and is made from a solid block of anodized aluminum, a process that takes approximately 12 weeks to produce. This detail helps to explain its price of €5,800 (around $6,012).

Unlike some companies in Japan that have introduced turntable models using lasers instead of needles, the PP-1 incorporates more traditional components typical of a record player. The firm collaborated with Miniot, which had developed a similar minimalist turntable that also conceals its tonearm. Miniot's technology has been adapted for the PP-1, so its cartridge and needle are hidden behind a door system that closes, keeping them out of view when there is no record on the platter.

The PP-1 does not feature manual speed control; instead, it uses technology that automatically detects whether a record should be played at 33 or 45 RPM, constantly adjusting the motor speed to ensure optimal playback at all times. In addition to being a visually appealing object, the turntable also promises high sound quality. However, vinyl lovers will need to remember to place the records upside down on the PP-1 to listen to the desired tracks.

Power is provided through a 5V USB-C port, and the device includes only a 3.5mm audio output for connecting to active or passive speakers that require an additional amplifier. For those looking for a complete sound system, Waiting For Ideas has also designed a set of 80W passive speakers that reach 85 decibels, compatible with the dimensions of the PP-1. These speakers are available for preorder at a price of €3,200 (around $3,320) and will also require about 12 weeks for manufacturing. However, a separate amplifier is necessary, as the studio does not offer a matching option.
