Tesla's Optimus robot steals the spotlight at the robotaxi event.

Optimus may have some new abilities.

At the Cybercab event, Tesla introduced its new Robovan vehicle, accompanied by a series of humanoid robots called Optimus. During the showcase, a video was presented showing these robots performing everyday tasks, such as picking up a package from the door and watering plants. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, emphasized that "Optimus will walk among you," and that people will be able to approach them to receive drinks.

Musk stated that the robot has the capability to do virtually "anything," citing examples like walking dogs, taking care of children, mowing lawns, and serving drinks. According to his projections, the cost of this robot will range between $20,000 and $30,000 in the long term. Musk expressed his belief that this will be "the greatest product of any kind."

Following the presentation, live footage was broadcast showing people interacting with the Optimus robots, although the actions they were performing were limited, resembling more of a performance. Despite some attempts, like delivering small gift bags and playing rock, paper, scissors, the robot was seen only holding a cup with ice on a beverage table. The event also showcased a closed structure where a group of robots was dancing.

Since last year, Musk has introduced a lighter and faster Gen 2 model of the robots. In a financial results call in April, the CEO stated that Optimus would begin performing "useful tasks" by the end of this year and that there is a possibility of them being sold "externally by the end of next year." Although the idea of a Tesla bot was not taken seriously during its initial announcement in 2021, where a man dressed as a robot performed a comedic dance, the company has shown significant progress since then.

Musk has promised that Optimus will represent a "fundamental transformation for civilization" and has made ambitious projections regarding its economic impact, asserting that it could be produced at scale, with the potential to reach millions of units. In his remarks, he also mentioned that the development of this robot could contribute to a future without poverty.
