Steam will implement support and new rules for 'season pass' content.

Steam has found an alternative to simplify the complicated season passes of video games.

Steam is implementing support and establishing new rules for "season pass" content. The platform has published guidelines urging developers to reflect on the benefits that customers can gain from purchasing these types of passes. This information was shared by Pavel Djundik, creator of SteamDB.

"Season passes" have gained significant popularity, especially in free-to-play or multiplayer games, where digital updates, such as special outfits and weapons, are promised in exchange for an additional cost. With the new Steam rules, developers are required to provide a list with descriptions of the items that buyers can expect to receive upon acquiring a pass. In case the release of a DLC is delayed, Steam will allow developers to reschedule it with a limit of up to 3 months. Additionally, if a DLC is canceled, buyers must receive a corresponding refund.

Steam is also redefining what constitutes a "season pass." Considering that a "Season Pass" is essentially a pre-purchase of DLC, developers must take into account the guidelines that govern pre-orders when creating a pass. For this reason, Steam will not offer "season passes" unless it is in exceptional situations with trusted partners who have a proven track record on the platform.

Furthermore, Steam warns developers: if they are not prepared to clearly communicate the content included in each DLC and the release dates, they should not offer a "Season Pass." According to Games Radar, these new rules could pose a greater challenge for independent developers, who may lack the experience and resources necessary to meet the established requirements, potentially limiting their ability to offer a "season pass."
