Squid Game: Unleashed will be accessible from its launch without the need for a Netflix subscription.

Netflix has revealed that its mobile multiplayer game based on Squid Game will be available to play on Android and iOS devices without the need for an active subscription to the platform. This launch is scheduled for December 17, although this free option will only be available for a "limited time," which has not been specified.

Known as Squid Game: Unleashed, the game will allow users to compete with friends online through a series of mini-games. These competitions are inspired by the series or are based on "classic childhood activities" with a deadly twist. The party royale-type game shows influences from the Mario Party franchise, although the connection may have been more direct than initially thought. In 2021, an independent developer named Dani released Crab Game for Windows, macOS, and Linux. This title was a clear reference to the Netflix series, featuring Mario Party-style mini-games that initially mirrored the competitions from Squid Game, but with a cartoonish graphic style. Later, the game expanded its competition catalog beyond those suggested in the series.

Although we have not yet had the opportunity to play Squid Game: Unleashed, its trailer shows surprising similarities to Crab Game, including a similar artistic style. However, it is possible that the gameplay is quite different from what the Netflix trailer suggests. It is evident that the company has drawn inspiration from the work of an independent developer who, in turn, was inspired by their own concept. Despite any potential controversies this may cause, the launch of this game aligns with the promotion of the second season of Squid Game, which will begin airing on December 26.
