Sony limits reservations for the 30th anniversary edition of the PS5 Pro in Japan to PSN accounts with 30 hours of activity.
Sony is cracking down on resellers.
The commemorative edition for the 30th anniversary of the PS5 has started a pre-order process in Japan, which has been restricted to combat resale by speculators. Last week, a limited collection of PS5 consoles and accessories was launched in celebration of PlayStation's 30 years, which sold out quickly, including 12,300 units of the themed PS5 Pro.
Shortly after, it was found that some resellers had purchased the bundles, valued at $999 / £959.99, and began offering them on eBay at prices ten times higher than market value. To prevent scammers from ruining the experience for true enthusiasts, Sony has implemented new restrictions in Japan.
Reportedly, the official PlayStation page in Japan has detailed that to purchase a PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition bundle, interested parties must meet certain requirements. First, they must have a PSN account registered in Japan, and second, they must have at least 30 hours of activity on PS4 or PS5 from February 2014 to September 19, 2024.
In the UK and the United States, it seems the stock of the special edition has completely sold out on the PlayStation Direct website. The PS5 Pro is expected to launch globally on November 7, 2024, with a price of $699.99 / £699.99 / AU$1,200, and pre-orders will begin on October 10, 2024, at various retailers.
When the PS5 Pro was officially announced last month, its high cost generated controversy; however, according to Sony, the numerous new features of the console, including PSSR technology, justify the price tag.
