Sony cancels an unannounced live service God of War game.
Is this the God of War game you were waiting for?
In recent years, Sony had projected to develop a dozen new live-service games, but this number has significantly decreased. By the end of 2023, the number had already dropped to six, a change that occurred before the successful launch of Helldivers II and the debacle that was Concord in 2024. Jason Schreier has confirmed that, indeed, Sony has canceled two unannounced live-service projects.
One of these games originated from Bend Games, the studio responsible for Syphon Filter and Days Gone. The other canceled title was a live-service game based on God of War, which Bluepoint Games had been working on for a couple of years. Bluepoint, which has now become part of Sony's acquired developer portfolio, is known for its work on remasters and ports such as Demon’s Souls, the first three Uncharted games, and Shadow of the Colossus, among others.
Despite the cancellations, Schreier assures that the studios will not close, although there is no information about what their next projects will be. The live-service approach in the gaming world seemed to have great potential following the success of Fortnite and other platforms, but titles like Concord, Anthem, and Redfall have demonstrated how complicated this model can be. In Sony's case, it has previously been reported about the cancellation of other titles, including a Spider-Man game revealed during the Insomniac hack, Twisted Metal, and a project related to Destiny known as Payback.
Despite these setbacks, information is still expected regarding Marathon, the extraction shooter that Bungie is reviving, as well as Fairgames, a PvP heist title being developed by Haven Studios.
