It is rumored that Apple's augmented reality smart glasses will be released in 2026, incorporating microLED technology.

A new device on the way?

Meta has recently showcased an impressive demonstration of its augmented reality glasses, Orion, rekindling interest in such devices. According to rumors, Apple is preparing its own version of AR glasses for 2026, integrating microLED technology into its design.

The information comes from a well-known tipster, who stated that Apple "has not abandoned" microLED technology, which it has been exploring for several years. This technology is notable for its ability to deliver high brightness and more effectively deepen blacks compared to OLED screens, making it a superior choice over current display technologies. However, its complexity and production costs have limited its availability in smaller devices so far.

The future of microLED looks promising, as Apple plans to use this technology for both its augmented reality glasses and the Apple Watch Ultra, with a launch also expected in 2026. Although we haven't seen the release of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 this year, it is speculated that Apple may be accelerating the development of new devices, contrary to previous expectations of a 2027 launch.

In the past, there were reports that the release of Apple's AR glasses had been postponed indefinitely while the company shifted its focus to a more affordable VR headset. However, Meta's success with its Ray-Ban Smart glasses seems to have influenced Apple's reevaluation of its strategy. Furthermore, while its mixed reality headset, Apple Vision Pro, is powerful and costly, it has not achieved large-scale sales, which could be driving Apple to develop a more accessible device.
