Samsung's Bespoke Smart Refrigerators Offer AI-Powered Shopping Through Instacart.
Please, more milk.
Samsung has revealed that its smart refrigerators will soon have the ability to recognize when you are running low on a product and add it directly to your Instacart app, allowing you to order necessary items straight from the fridge. As part of a new long-term collaboration with Instacart, the company will enable users to shop for groceries through the screens of its Bespoke models, which include a 32-inch model and one featuring a new 9-inch display, launched at CES.
The system utilizes Samsung Vision AI food recognition technology to identify products inside the refrigerator and detect which ones are in low quantity. A camera located above the door allows the device to identify up to 37 types of food when users place or remove them from inside. However, there are limitations, such as the fact that it cannot see items in the door compartments or the freezer.
Additionally, users can manually enter information about other products onto the food list via the Samsung Food app, available on both the refrigerator and mobile devices. While it was already possible to create a shopping list and send it to Instacart, this new functionality aims to simplify and further automate that experience. The app will also automatically update the food list as products are purchased.
When a recipe saved in the app is prepared, the used ingredients will be automatically removed from the food list and added to the shopping list, working in tandem with the AI-powered cameras to ensure that the refrigerator is always stocked. However, the effectiveness of this functionality in everyday situations remains to be seen.
It is worth noting that although the Instacart app had previously been available on Samsung smart refrigerators, its current integration with the device's cameras represents a significant advancement. This year, the integration with Instacart will come via a firmware update for models that include the AI Vision Inside system, launched the previous year.
