Reddit suffered a major outage: the popular discussion platform was down.

This is what happened.

On Wednesday, Reddit experienced a significant outage that plunged its millions of users into darkness, leaving them without a place to share their opinions, memes, and "Ask Me Anything" questions. At 5:21 PM ET, the popular platform began to show signs of normalcy. According to Down Detector, reports of the outage had decreased, indicating that the worst was over. The problem, according to information provided by Reddit, was caused by a bug in a recent update that has since been fixed.

Despite the recovery, the platform experienced moments of instability, generating error messages as users attempted to access Reddit.com. An issue with the content delivery network (CDN) was considered more serious, suggesting that there could be a deeper failure in the supporting infrastructure crucial for handling the large amount of content users upload. A Reddit spokesperson noted that the team was working to resolve it, though they could not provide an estimated timeline.

Throughout the afternoon, Reddit showed signs of improvement, with the Popular section beginning to come back to life, although visible errors continued to affect user experience. Users were able to see more pages loading correctly, though there were still overall performance issues, hinting that the platform had not yet fully returned to normal.

In characteristic humorous fashion, Reddit communicated via X (formerly Twitter) that they were working to fix the issue. Despite the interruptions, the social media community enjoyed a bit of Reddit's slip, making comments about it and relishing the moment.

Meanwhile, other social media services like Bluesky also faced their own outages, although there is no evidence that these outages are related. The day also coincided with a Q&A session (AMA) by journalist Katie Couric, adding a level of irony to the situation facing Reddit. Although difficulties persist, many users remain optimistic about the full return of the platform.
