OpenAI has improved ChatGPT's memory: the latest updates as Sam Altman comments on the integration of AI into our lives.

Don't expect a new model for now.

OpenAI has been continuously launching new features and updates, surprising its users with every announcement. Recently, Sam Altman, the company's CEO, took to X (formerly Twitter) to hint at an upcoming feature that is generating a lot of anticipation. In his post, he mentioned, "There are times when I wake up early and can't go back to sleep because we're launching a new feature that I've been excited about for a long time. Today is one of those days!"

It is common for OpenAI to make its launches mid-morning Pacific Time, which corresponds to the afternoon on the East Coast. This has led to speculation about what might be presented today. Altman also added that, while it is a "new feature," it would be surprising if it were a new model or an update to o3 or o4. However, he pointed out that this feature will be crucial for how artificial intelligence will be integrated into our lives.

The recent addition of an enhanced memory feature in ChatGPT has performed well, although the service has faced some interruptions in recent weeks, primarily due to the demand for image generation that has overloaded the system. Altman commented that OpenAI usage has significantly increased, and they have managed to gather more resources, thanks to a simple call to the online community for help.

It is important to clarify that memory is not completely new to ChatGPT, as the assistant AI has had this capability for some time. Recent updates enhance this existing memory function, which is now described as "new and improved." This will allow ChatGPT to remember past conversations and provide more accurate and helpful responses based on previous interactions.

Users will be notified when their accounts are updated with this enhanced memory, which is being rolled out for Pro subscribers, and the feature will soon be available to Plus subscribers. Those with ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, or Education accounts will receive this functionality in the coming weeks.

The new memory system will allow ChatGPT to summarize past discussions in bullet points, enabling users to ask questions about previous topics more smoothly. Additionally, users will have the option to opt out of the memory function, with the introduction of a temporary conversations option to start dialogues without affecting memory.

The memory enhancement is already being deployed to some users, although it is not yet available for everyone. Altman has expressed that this new feature is a significant advancement, indicating OpenAI's future direction: to create AI systems that know users and become extremely useful and personalized over time.

This change in memory could facilitate the review of conversations without the need to manually scroll through all chat logs. ChatGPT will thus move towards greater personalization and effectiveness, adapting to the specific needs of each user.
