OLED monitors will experience a significant improvement in image quality.
TCL is developing an innovative technology aimed at enhancing OLED panels.
During the Omdia Korea Display Conference, TCL, primarily known for its televisions, showcased its new OLED technology, aiming to position itself among the best gaming monitors. The company highlighted significant advancements in image quality, energy efficiency, and durability of OLED screens and laptops. This development is based on its innovative inkjet printed OLED (IJP OLED) technique, which has been a topic of discussion for about a year.
Current OLED screen production faces issues due to the contamination of the organic materials used in manufacturing, affecting performance. TCL claims that its new IJP OLED process will not only enhance performance but also improve image quality. The company asserts that this method reduces energy consumption, doubles material efficiency, decreases internal light reflection loss by 50%, and improves light emission efficiency by 150%. Additionally, the lifespan of these materials has significantly increased, achieving three times the opening and a tenfold increase in longevity. This technology is also expected to reduce overall production costs by 20%.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding these innovations, it is essential to note that the technology has not yet been commercialized, and TCL's optimistic projections may not fully translate to final products. However, prototypes are already in development, such as a 14-inch hybrid OLED TCL CSOT display with a 2.8K resolution, featuring 99% DCI-P3 coverage and a refresh rate ranging from 30 Hz to 120 Hz. TCL has indicated that the IJP OLED will initially be targeted at "medium-sized display applications," including monitors, laptops, and special devices like medical displays.
The company also showcased a 65-inch 8K rollable TV using the same technology earlier this year.
On the other hand, LG has launched a limited edition of its MyView Smart Monitor, available in pink, accompanied by a matching keyboard and mouse. This 27-inch smart monitor, with an IPS panel and Full HD (1080p) resolution, allows access to streaming applications without the need to be connected to a computer. Although its specifications are basic, the complete setup is priced at $299, making it an attractive option.
