Old Phones Can Help Plant New Trees Thanks to AT&T's New Trade-In Program.

Celebrate Earth Month and support reforestation efforts in California.

The arrival of April brings an excellent opportunity to contribute to reforestation efforts in California. AT&T, in collaboration with the insurance company Assurant, has launched an initiative in support of the Arbor Day Foundation's forest restoration program. This effort focuses on areas affected by the brutal wildfire season in California.

Throughout the month of April, the company has announced that for every device traded in through its exchange program, a tree will be planted in the Placerville nursery, the only one in California dedicated to reforestation after wildfires. The goal is to plant 75,000 trees by the end of the month. Roman Smith, AT&T's global environmental sustainability director, stated that the company has been connecting Californians for 145 years and is committed to rebuilding communities affected by environmental disasters.

This program complements AT&T's disaster response initiatives following the wildfires in Southern California. The company has worked in collaboration with response agencies and local organizations to keep those affected connected, offering public WiFi and charging stations in evacuation areas, as well as a Mobile Connectivity Center that provided free internet access and equipment to residents of Malibu. Additionally, credits were offered to customers in impacted areas, and $2 million was donated to relief efforts.

With global warming, wildfires and other climate phenomena are becoming more intense. Just a two-degree increase has triggered historic wildfire periods due to dry vegetation. At the same time, the problem of electronic waste is worsening, with millions of devices discarded annually, becoming one of the fastest-growing solid waste streams in the world. Although many utility companies are adopting recycling and circular economy programs, the effectiveness of these efforts remains in question.

Biju Nair, president of Assurant Global Connected Living, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration with AT&T to achieve sustainability goals through circularity, resulting in a measurable reduction in carbon emissions and electronic waste. In 2024, AT&T had already implemented a similar exchange program that managed to plant over 50,000 trees in forests in Oregon and Florida.

The "Tree for Trade-In" initiative not only focuses on reforestation but also represents the power of collective action, where each returned device contributes to planting a tree, promoting the renewal of communities affected by the devastating wildfires in California.
