Boston Dynamics announced in 2020 that its dog-shaped robot Spot is ready to be used in workplace environments. Its most recent task is being carried out at Michelin.

The Spot robot, developed by Boston Dynamics, has been integrated into various sectors since its launch four years ago. This quadruped has been used for different functions in multiple companies, including mapping factories at Ford and conducting safety inspections at a Kia plant. Its most recent involvement has been at a Michelin facility in Lexington, South Carolina, where tires and light vehicles are manufactured.

Recently, Boston Dynamics shared a video showing Spot performing various tasks on-site as part of a pilot program. Wayne Pender, reliability manager at Michelin, stated that Spot’s arrival was met with excitement, almost like a Christmas gift. Ryan Burns, another reliability manager, emphasized the importance of anticipating equipment failures to avoid plant shutdowns. Spot contributes by scanning 350 locations with a thermal camera, identifying potential overheating or anomalies in the functioning of parts.

The robot uses specialized software called Orbit to process the collected data, which is sent to operators for final analysis. When any irregularity is detected, a human technician is dispatched to assess the situation and determine the best course of action. Burns noted that Spot's work allows technicians to focus on planning and scheduling repairs rather than just identifying them.

Additionally, Burns expressed that having more Spot units would be ideal to optimize inspection procedures and consequently enhance efficiency and increase production. Boston Dynamics continues to advance in the development of Spot, refining its capabilities through various pilot programs and collaborations both in the United States and around the world.
