Now you can enjoy Sigil, the 3D virtual tabletop experience of D&D, on PC.

Sigil seeks to recreate the experience of tabletop games without fully venturing into the realm of video games.

Dungeons & Dragons fans now have a new option for those moments when playing on a physical board isn't possible. Sigil, the 3D virtual tabletop experience developed by Wizards of the Coast, combines elements of video games without straying from the essence of sharing a game with friends. This platform was publicly launched this week, allowing anyone to experience its features.

For those unfamiliar with a 3D VTT, imagine a graphical recreation that captures all the iconic elements of D&D in a digital environment: virtual versions of the board, miniatures, dice, character sheets, among others. While it's not a complete video game like Baldur's Gate, as the figures are static and move like physical pieces, it offers digital touches such as animated spell effects and lighting effects. When executed correctly, it allows for the recreation of a high-quality D&D team, enriched with additional content, and enables play with people from around the world.

Sigil, whose name is inspired by a city in D&D lore, is not the first VTT of its kind. TaleSpire, from BouncyRock Entertainment, is another popular 3D VTT currently in early access for PC and Mac. Its business model is simpler, as users pay $25 as a one-time purchase. While Sigil can be explored for free and users can join other games, a Master level subscription on D&D Beyond ($6 monthly or $55 annually) is required to host multiplayer games and access extra content such as building kits and miniatures customization options.

One of the advantages of Sigil is its integration with D&D Beyond's character sheets. This means that those who have already created their characters, gear, and abilities in the official digital service can expect a smooth transition. Sigil offers a library of assets, brushes, and lighting effects, allowing users to customize their maps and miniatures to their liking. The platform includes tabletop touches, such as realistic virtual dice rolling across the game board and customization options for miniatures in terms of scale, size, and appearance. According to the company, "all our assets are designed as if they were high-quality miniatures or figures, attempting to capture an aesthetic between painted and realistic."

Sigil is built on Unreal Engine 5, requiring at least a decent gaming PC to access the platform. Although its minimum requirements are not excessive, D&D Beyond recommends having an Nvidia RTX 2080, AMD R9 380, or Intel UHD graphics card, as well as 16 GB of RAM. For now, it is only available for Windows, but the company plans to develop it for consoles, mobile devices, and even refrigerators.
