Mira Murati, who served as CTO at OpenAI and announced her departure last month, is seeking venture capital funding for a new artificial intelligence startup. Reportedly, this new company will focus on developing AI products based on proprietary models, and it is anticipated to raise over 100 million dollars in this funding round.

In announcing her resignation, Murati stated on X that OpenAI had “fundamentally changed the way AI systems learn and reason in the face of complex problems” in its recent releases. She noted that she was stepping away to create the time and space necessary to embark on her own exploration, although she did not provide details about her future intentions.

Before joining OpenAI in 2018 as Vice President of Applied AI and Partnerships, Murati worked at Tesla and Leap Motion. In 2022, she was promoted to CTO and temporarily took on the role of CEO during the brief departure of Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of the company. Her departure adds to a series of recent exits by high-ranking executives at OpenAI, including the director of research and the vice president of research, who also announced their resignations shortly after hers. A week later, OpenAI announced it had raised 6.6 billion dollars in the largest venture capital funding round in history.
