Minecraft will stop offering support for virtual reality next spring.
Minecraft players will see virtual reality become a thing of the past, similar to a creeper exploding. Mojang has decided to end support for all virtual reality and augmented reality platforms starting in March 2025.
Minecraft players will face a significant change in the virtual and mixed reality gameplay experience. Mojang, the developer of the popular game, recently announced that the March 2025 update will be the last for the PlayStation VR version. The patch notes for the latest update of the Bedrock edition stated that "our ability to support VR/MR devices has come to an end and will not continue to be supported in updates after March 2025."
Despite this news, virtual reality enthusiasts of Minecraft still have good options. After the final update in March 2025, it was clarified that "they can continue building in their worlds, and their Marketplace purchases (including Minecoins) will remain available on a non-VR/MR graphical device, such as a computer monitor." This may be discouraging for a game that had stood out as an excellent choice for virtual reality experiences. Additionally, considering the huge sales figures that Minecraft has maintained year after year, this decision could have repercussions on the virtual and mixed reality ecosystem as a whole.
However, there is a positive aspect for the Minecraft community. After a long wait, the game now features a native edition for PlayStation 5. Sony's latest generation consoles had been using the PS4 version until now, but moving forward, the game will offer 4K resolution and 60 fps, with an increased draw distance. PS5 owners who already have the PS4 version of Minecraft will be able to access this new update for free on the PlayStation Store. With the Bundles of Bravery update released yesterday, it’s a promising time to embark on new adventures in the blocky world.
