Microsoft removes Skype credits and phone numbers in favor of subscriptions.
Skype is promoting subscriptions instead of pay-per-use options.
Microsoft has decided to end the sale of Skype credits and phone number features this week. The company has chosen to focus its efforts on promoting subscriptions, rather than maintaining these traditional options.
Skype Credit was a pay-as-you-go system that allowed users to make both local and international calls. On the other hand, the Skype Number provided users with a phone number that allowed others to contact them through their Skype account. These services have been an integral part of the platform for years, making it a popular choice for making calls to landlines and mobile phones over the Internet.
Amit Fulay, Vice President of Microsoft Teams and Skype, stated in a press release that while new sales of Skype numbers and credits have been halted, customers can continue to use the numbers and credits they already own. Additionally, users have the option to purchase outgoing calling services through monthly Skype subscriptions or use free VoIP services to make voice or video calls.
While existing Skype numbers will continue to function for the time being, it is anticipated that Microsoft will eventually lead all users toward a subscription model. This means that even though existing Skype credit can still be used, it will not be possible to acquire more credits. It is important to note that, even with new Skype subscriptions, there is no option that replaces the functionality of having a phone number that people can call to reach someone via Skype.
This move comes after Microsoft surprised users by removing ads from Skype earlier this year and introducing new features, such as AI-generated images. Since its acquisition by Microsoft in 2011, the communication app has struggled to maintain its relevance against competitors like WhatsApp, Zoom, and FaceTime. In recent years, Microsoft has redirected its attention to Teams, especially following the launch of a personal version in 2020.
