Microsoft ends production of the Surface Studio 2 Plus with no plans for a successor.
It seems that the end has come for the Surface Studio device.
Microsoft has decided to cease production of its all-in-one PC, the Surface Studio 2 Plus, just two years after launching its latest model. In recent weeks, stock levels of this device have started to dwindle, and the company has confirmed that it will no longer continue manufacturing it. According to a statement from Microsoft, "customers can still purchase the Surface Studio 2 Plus through retailers and partners that have stock." However, in areas where stock has run out, new purchases of the model will no longer be available.
The Surface Studio initially made its debut as a surprise addition to Microsoft's Surface family. With a touchscreen and an innovative hinge system, it allowed its 28-inch display to transform into a large tablet for drawing activities. This device was aimed at creatives, a segment where Apple dominated, right at a time when Microsoft had launched Windows 10 and was looking to revive interest in desktop PCs.
It seems that the story of the Surface Studio has come to an end, having previously been considered the ultimate all-in-one device for Windows. Although it has always been an expensive device targeted at a specific niche, there was nothing else like it on the market. Furthermore, Microsoft has been gradually moving away from different areas of its Surface lineup, with no plans for successors for other devices such as the Surface Duo or Surface Earbuds.
This year, the company has focused its attention on its range of Copilot Plus devices, which includes the new Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7. Additionally, it also released business-focused versions of the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6, incorporating Intel chips. Variants of the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11 with Lunar Lake processors are expected to arrive in 2025, after a prototype of the Surface Laptop appeared in a second-hand market in China in October.
As an enthusiast who has wished for a Surface Studio monitor, I still hold out hope that Microsoft will release a standalone display in the future that folds and transforms, allowing any laptop or PC to become a Surface Studio.
