Microsoft created a computer that cannot run local applications.
Do you prefer to delegate all your Windows tasks to the cloud? Microsoft may have the ideal compact desktop device for you: Windows 365 Link.
At the Microsoft Ignite 2024 event, the tech company introduced Windows 365 Link, a compact and lightweight computer that connects to Windows 365. This virtual operating system, hosted in the cloud, offers an experience similar to that of a traditional Windows installation, but operating from a remote server. It is expected to be available in "selected markets" starting in April next year, with a suggested retail price of $349.
Windows 365 Link features a fast boot time, which can be done "in seconds," and wakes up "instantly" from sleep mode. This device includes multiple ports, supporting dual monitors in 4K resolution, four USB ports, audio and Ethernet connectors, as well as a range of wireless connectivity options such as Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
It is important to note that Windows 365 Link cannot be considered a traditional computer. While it can handle tasks such as meetings in Microsoft Teams and sessions in Webex, it lacks local storage and does not allow the installation of applications. Furthermore, the operating system it uses is highly restricted, featuring security measures and a passwordless login that cannot be disabled.
Microsoft's primary focus for Windows 365 Link is not consumers, but businesses. The company has indicated that organizations will be able to manage and restore these devices remotely, as well as set them up to search for, download, and install updates automatically. Microsoft also highlights the energy efficiency of the device, stating that it consumes less power compared to most desktop computers.
Regarding sustainability, Windows 365 Link uses 90% recycled aluminum alloy in its upper cover, 100% recycled aluminum in its lower plate, and 100% recycled copper along with 96% recycled tin solder on its motherboard. Organizations in Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States can already apply to participate in the Windows 365 Link preview program starting today. The hope is that this new product will avoid the same issues that plagued Microsoft's last compact PC.
