Meta could launch its first true augmented reality headset by 2027.
A report reveals Meta's upcoming moves in the hardware sector, based on information from sources close to the company's activities.
A recent report has indicated that Meta is making progress in the development of new wearable technology devices. According to sources close to the company, they are in the process of creating at least three different models of smart glasses, and the roadmap includes the launch of their first true augmented reality glasses.
Currently, Meta is collaborating with Ray-Ban on the sale of its line of smart glasses, which is internally known as Supernova. It has been reported that this existing line will reach new markets, although no further details about these destinations have been specified. Additionally, it is expected that their technologies will be applied to frames from other brands within the Luxottica group, which could result in the launch of a model known as Supernova 2, based on Oakley's Sphaera glasses. These glasses will be aimed at cyclists and athletes, featuring a camera located in the center of the frames.
Another model in development is internally referred to as Hypernova. This device aims to provide a genuine augmented reality experience, allowing users to run simple apps, receive notifications, and view photos taken with the device. This set is expected to be priced higher, projected to cost around $1,000. It was recently mentioned that Meta was working on integrating a display into its Ray-Ban glasses models.
Additionally, the company is developing an augmented reality product under the name Orion, although this model will not be marketed. Instead, a different version of this hardware, known as Artemis, is planned for release starting in 2027. Sources reported that these prototypes are lighter than the Orion ones and more advanced than the previous model.
Among the developments is also a wristband that could control the smart glasses. Most current models feature controls on the temple, but this wrist control option would be similar to that used in the Orion prototype.
Finally, it is confirmed that Meta is still working on prototypes of camera-equipped headphones that could compete with Apple’s AirPods. Although this project was previously mentioned, it seems to have faced some challenges in its development, and if it reaches the market, it may take several years.
