Colors, textures, and other elements can be modified based on an indication.

Midjourney, the AI image creation platform, has announced the incorporation of new advanced editing options to its tool, as shared by its CEO David Holz on Discord. From now on, users will be able to edit images that have been uploaded, using generative intelligence, something that until now could only be done with images generated by the same AI system.

This new editor will be available on the web, representing a significant expansion of the functionalities that were previously exclusive to Discord. Traditionally, AI-based image editing tools limited manipulation to those images generated using the same AI model. However, Midjourney is daring to open this possibility, allowing users to modify images that were not created by the model, which implies a greater understanding from the AI regarding the images to be edited.

Once an image is uploaded, multiple editing options will be offered. Users will be able to zoom in or out on the image, adjust the angle, and manipulate it with a single command, without needing to be on Discord. A digital brush will also be available for making precise modifications. One of the highlights of this update is the Retexturization feature, which allows users to alter colors and other details while maintaining the integrity of the shapes and objects within the image.

The advancement in AI image creation and editing capabilities has sparked a wide debate on ethics, leading to litigation and discussions within the industry. Midjourney’s decisions in this area could influence how its competitors and regulators establish operational standards. The company has committed to including metadata in AI-generated images to facilitate identification, although it has yet to adopt the more comprehensive C2PA standard.

In light of these innovative features, Midjourney has decided to temporarily restrict access to a portion of the current community, in addition to increasing human moderation over the results obtained. Holz emphasized the need to survey users to determine how to implement these restrictions effectively, seeking a balance between accessibility and volume.

For average users, these new image manipulation capabilities could make using Midjourney more appealing and straightforward. The company aims to broaden its accessibility, moving away from Discord as the only available platform, although it remains a central hub for its creations. This move suggests that Midjourney does not want to fall behind, especially considering that there are users who might not be interested in signing up for Discord.
