Mastodon launches toy sale in the market.
If you're interested in decentralized and open-source social networks that prioritize the power of the people over that of millionaires, now you have the opportunity to support them.
Mastodon, recognized as a decentralized alternative to X, has taken a new step to strengthen its community by launching a product line. This Tuesday, the platform began selling plush toys of its iconic mastodons, prehistoric creatures that give the social network its name. The decision to offer merchandise stems from a survey where over 6,700 users expressed interest in acquiring brand-related products.
Last year, the organization had already indicated its intention to fund its development efforts through merchandise sales, which generated excitement among its followers. In a previous trial round that included mugs, t-shirts, and pins, all items sold out quickly, prompting the launch of these new plush toys.
These plush toys, available only in one size for a price of $45, are light-colored and washable, with a height of 35 cm, making them ideal for use as travel pillows. However, initial availability is limited to the European Union due to shipping delays to the United States caused by recent storms.
In the first hours after their launch, Mastodon sold 176 units of the plush toys, generating almost $8,000 in revenue, although this amount will be affected by production and shipping costs. By the end of the day, sales surpassed 200 units. Although this number may not be enough to cover the salary of a single developer, it certainly can contribute to the company's server expenses.
Despite the challenges Mastodon faces in competing with tech giants like X and Meta's Threads, the community's response shows enthusiastic support, backing them with the hashtag #plushtodon after making their purchases.
