LG Display confirms the arrival of the new four-layer OLED, as Panasonic mentioned at CES.
LG Display has confirmed the development of a new OLED panel technology with a four-layer structure.
Panasonic has recently announced at CES 2025 a new panel technology that will be implemented in its Z95B OLED television, which adopts a four-layer OLED panel structure. This development promises not only an increase in brightness but also improves the energy efficiency of the device. In response, LG Display has confirmed the development of this new technology and provided additional details that LG Electronics did not reveal during its presentation last week.
To understand the context, LG's new G5 OLED model, which was presented, has superior brightness compared to last year's model, although it lacks the MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology that the company designed to achieve competitive brightness against QD-OLED and micro-LED models. While LG remained somewhat reserved about the technology used to achieve the brightness increase in the G5, it was suspected that it involved this new type of four-layer OLED panel. Just two days after Panasonic's announcement, the latter also unveiled its four-layer OLED panel, presumably supplied by LG Display.
The structure of this new panel, known as Primary RGB Tandem, avoids the classic configuration of emissive layers of red, green, and yellow between two blue layers. Instead, the new structure features independent layers for the red, green, and two blue colors. This fourth model of OLED panel not only elevates brightness but also improves energy efficiency by 20% compared to previous generations. It is claimed that the new panel has the capability to reach brightness levels of up to 4,000 nits, a figure that aligns with what Samsung Display has mentioned for its QD-OLED panel. If the G5 manages to reach this brightness level, it could even surpass Panasonic's Z95B, which has a declared maximum brightness of 3,700 nits. Additionally, color brightness has also seen a significant increase, reaching up to 2,100 nits, which is 40% more than the previous year.
To optimize performance for black levels, regardless of ambient light, LG Display has designed an innovative low-reflection film that blocks 99% of internal and external reflections. The G5 OLED showcased at CES has managed to impress with its advanced technology, suggesting that it could be one of the best televisions of the year.
