LG Display confirms the arrival of its new four-layer OLED.

LG Display has announced the development of a new technology and has shared more information about it than LG Electronics, regarding an OLED composed of four panels.

Panasonic has prompted LG Display to unveil its new panel technology following the announcement of its OLED TV Z95B at CES 2025. This TV utilizes a four-layer OLED panel, enhancing brightness and efficiency. Meanwhile, LG Display has confirmed that it is developing this innovative technology, offering more details than those previously shared by LG Electronics.

LG's new G5 OLED, which was recently launched, is brighter than its predecessor, the G4, although it does not incorporate the MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology designed to boost brightness and compete with QD-OLED and micro-LED screens. LG had been reserved about this new technology, but it was suspected to be the four-layer OLED panel.

Days after Panasonic showcased its new OLED TV, it was confirmed that this four-layer panel comes from LG Display. Unlike previous panels that contained a red/green/yellow emissive layer interspersed between blue layers, the new technology, called Primary RGB Tandem, features independent red, green, and two blue layers. This fourth-generation structure provides an increase in brightness, not only in terms of white light but also in colors, achieving 20% more energy efficiency compared to earlier models.

LG Display indicated that this new panel can reach up to 4,000 nits of brightness, a figure similar to what Samsung anticipates for its QD-OLED. If the G5 achieves that level, it could even be brighter than Panasonic's Z95B, which has a maximum brightness of 3,700 nits. Furthermore, the projected color brightness is at 2,100 nits, representing a 40% increase compared to the previous year. This, along with an ultra-low reflection film developed by LG, enhances black level performance, reducing the emitted blue light and ensuring a superior viewing experience in various lighting conditions.

Additionally, Huawei has unveiled a significant update to its HarmonyOS operating system, which is now completely independent of Android. This new system, known as HarmonyOS NEXT, is based on the open-source project OpenHarmony and will initially launch in China, with future expansion plans. It includes a revamped lock screen, a redesigned control center, and faster animations, in addition to artificial intelligence capabilities and a new security system called "Star Shield."

On another note, LG Display has announced that it will showcase elastic displays at Seoul Fashion Week S/S 2025, while manufacturer HMD has revealed a Barbie-inspired phone, which promises to be a highly stylized collectible item.
