Is DPI Important? Not as Much as Mouse Manufacturers Want Us to Believe.

For all mice that have a sensitivity over 30,000 DPI: what is their purpose?

With the constant emergence of new computer mice, each one tries to stand out by offering innovative features, modern designs, or exceptional performance, all aimed at surpassing the competition. In this context, mouse manufacturers have begun to raise DPI (dots per inch) values, which measure the mouse's internal sensitivity, to extreme levels that seem unnecessary.

The question arises: Who are the mice that offer over 30,000 DPI intended for?

When it comes to gamers, one might think these extreme values could be useful, but the reality is quite different. Throughout my life, I have had a great passion for video games and PC peripherals. From my earliest memories watching my sister play, I have used a variety of gaming mice, and I have never exceeded 3,200 DPI unless it was just out of curiosity. Generally, I stick to between 800 and 1,600 DPI, with 1,200 being my usual setting, which is also considered average.

Although some users mention using settings of up to 8,000 DPI, these cases are isolated. For example, for those using ultrawide screens like the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9, a higher DPI may make sense due to the large area they need to cover, but it remains the exception rather than the norm.

In observing the professional realm of esports, it becomes clear that the majority of casual players do not use extremely high DPI settings, not even 10,000, much less 30,000. In the case of Counter-Strike 2, only 5% of professional players use more than 1,600 DPI, while 66% settle for just 400 DPI. Among professionals, the only ones reaching 3,200 DPI are Jame from Virtus.Pro and El1an, who is currently a free agent. The pattern is similar in other popular titles like Valorant and PUBG.

Additionally, in work or educational environments, the need to operate at five-digit DPI levels seems even further from reality. Setting a mouse to 10,000 DPI or more serves no clear purpose and could complicate simple tasks like navigating menus in everyday applications.

In conclusion, when choosing a gaming mouse, sensitivity measured in DPI should not be a deciding factor. Rather, the focus should be on comfort, reliability, and reasonable pricing. Extreme DPI settings appear to be more of a marketing strategy than a real market necessity, as at the end of the day, few users actually require these specifications.
