Instagram is experimenting with a "dislike" button for comments. This new option will be implemented in both Feed posts and Reels.
Instagram is testing a new "dislike" button, which has been introduced as a tool for users to express their dissatisfaction with comments they find inappropriate or irrelevant. This button is intended exclusively for comments, not for the posts themselves, and is being evaluated in both Reels and Feed posts.
Although the service will not display a "dislike" count, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has indicated that these downvotes will influence the ranking of comments. In this sense, this feature is similar to Reddit's "dislike" button. Mosseri commented on Threads that this option provides people with a private way to express their disagreement with certain comments. The intention is for this to help make comments more kind on the platform.
From Meta, it has been noted that the primary goal of this button is to improve the quality of the comment section, which aligns with Mosseri's statement. For now, this feature is in the testing phase and is only available to a very small group of users, but it could be more widely implemented in the future.
In recent months, Instagram has been very active in introducing new elements. Development of a video editing app that is notably similar to CapCut, TikTok's sister app, has been announced. Additionally, the duration of Reels has been extended to three minutes, which is also considered an attempt to imitate TikTok. Finally, the platform has decided to remove external fact-checkers, which has generated some controversy.
